Egypt Reaffirms Opposition to Palestinian Displacement Amid Renewed Gaza Conflict

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty firmly reiterated his country’s opposition to the forced displacement of Palestinians, calling for a two-state solution as the path to long-term regional peace. His remarks came during a press conference in Cairo on Thursday following talks with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. “There will be no security or stability for Israel or the region without the Palestinian people achieving their legitimate rights and the establishment of their state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” Abdelatty stated.

His comments come as Israel resumes military operations in Gaza, ending an eight-week ceasefire that had temporarily halted fighting and allowed for increased humanitarian aid to enter the besieged territory. The renewed conflict has escalated humanitarian concerns in Gaza, where over 33,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and 1.7 million people displaced since hostilities began in October 2023.

Efforts by international mediators including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to broker a new ceasefire have so far failed. Hamas continues to demand a full cessation of Israeli airstrikes and a permanent end to the conflict before agreeing to any further negotiations. Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza, has consistently rejected proposals suggesting the relocation of Palestinians into the Sinai Peninsula, warning such moves would violate international law and further destabilize the region.

Hungary, a close ally of Israel within the European Union, has supported Israel’s right to self-defense but has also echoed calls for renewed diplomatic efforts and increased humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.
