Egypt and Senegal Step Up Diplomatic Coordination Ahead of AU Summit

The foreign ministers of Egypt and Senegal met near Cairo on Tuesday to deepen bilateral ties and align their positions on key African and global issues ahead of the upcoming African Union summit. Egypt’s Badr Abdelatty and Senegal’s Cheikh Niang discussed expanding political coordination, with particular focus on the conflict in Sudan. Abdelatty stressed the need to preserve Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, rejecting the formation of parallel authorities or any attempt at partition. Sudan has been engulfed in war since 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), derailing a planned transition to civilian rule. The conflict has since evolved into a de facto territorial split, with the RSF holding large parts of western Sudan.

At the regional level, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s backing for counter-terrorism efforts in West Africa and the Sahel, calling for strategies that combine security operations with development to address the root causes of instability. He described Senegal as a key strategic partner for Egypt in West Africa, highlighting growing cooperation between Cairo and Dakar.
