EU Grants €10M to Boost Senegal’s Defense, Curb Sahel Insecurity

The European Union has approved a €10 million defense assistance package for Senegal to strengthen the country’s security infrastructure and bolster its leadership in promoting regional stability in West Africa. Announced under the European Peace Facility (EPF), the funding will provide non-lethal military support, including advanced surveillance systems for land and river borders, intelligence tools, secure communications infrastructure, and protective gear for troops. The package is intended to help Senegal respond to cross-border threats, violent extremism, and organized crime, particularly as instability continues to spill over from the Sahel region.

This is the first time Senegal is receiving direct support under the EPF, a strategic EU fund established in March 2021 to finance defense-related activities under the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). The EPF is designed to enhance the capacity of partner countries to prevent conflict, conduct peacekeeping, and manage security threats. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell described the initiative as part of a broader European effort to reinforce frontline states in West Africa. He emphasized Senegal’s critical role in preventing the spread of terrorism and supporting regional peace missions.

Senegal, a relatively stable democracy in a volatile region, has contributed troops to multiple peacekeeping missions, including the UN’s operations in Mali and The Gambia. With extremist groups increasingly threatening coastal West African nations, the EU views Dakar as a key strategic partner in containing further violence and instability. Officials from the Senegalese Ministry of Armed Forces welcomed the move, stating it aligns with the government’s national security strategy and plans for modernizing its defense infrastructure.
