Brussels has reiterated its commitment to supporting Burkina Faso with continued development aid and food security assistance, despite ongoing regional challenges. The European Union’s Special Representative to the Sahel, João Gomes Cravinho, reaffirmed this support during his official visit to Ouagadougou on Tuesday.
In a series of discussions with Burkinabe Foreign Minister Jean Marie Traoré, Cravinho emphasized the EU’s unwavering dedication to strengthening cooperation with Burkina Faso. The talks centered on enhancing humanitarian efforts, improving food security, and boosting the country’s development prospects, particularly in light of the security and humanitarian crises affecting the Sahel region.
The EU’s commitment comes at a crucial time, as Burkina Faso, like many other countries in the Sahel, faces growing challenges such as food shortages, displacement due to armed conflicts, and instability from extremist groups. The country’s agricultural sector, which is critical to its economy, has been hit hard by these disruptions, exacerbating the risk of food insecurity.
Cravinho acknowledged the difficult situation in the region but assured the Burkinabe government that the EU would remain steadfast in its support. He underscored that the European Union is working closely with Burkina Faso to address immediate needs while also focusing on long-term development solutions that can strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations.

During the visit, the EU representative also outlined future plans to expand assistance in key sectors, including infrastructure, health, education, and governance. The EU aims to bolster Burkina Faso’s recovery and sustainable development efforts through both financial aid and technical expertise.
Burkina Faso has been facing increasing humanitarian challenges, with thousands of people displaced due to conflict, and food security remains a top priority for both the EU and Burkinabe authorities. The EU’s renewed commitment highlights its ongoing role as a key partner in addressing the pressing needs of the Sahel region.
With the EU’s continued support, Burkina Faso hopes to stabilize its economy, improve access to basic services, and build greater resilience in the face of regional turmoil.
