Gabon will hold its next presidential election on April 12, 2025, according to an announcement made by the council of ministers. The West African country is currently under military rule following a coup in August 2023, which ousted long-time president Ali Bongo Ondimba.
The decree, issued after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, confirmed the election date and set the electoral college to convene on April 12. This announcement comes after Gabon’s parliament adopted a new electoral code last Sunday, which outlines the regulations for the upcoming election.

The new electoral code, which still requires approval from Gabon’s Constitutional Court, has sparked controversy. Notably, it permits military personnel to run for public office, including the presidency, which was not allowed under previous laws. This change could pave the way for General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the leader of the August 2023 coup, to run for the presidency.
Under Gabon’s newly adopted constitution, which was ratified in a November 2023 referendum, the presidential term is set at seven years, with one potential renewal.
