Ghana to Begin Final Mass Evacuation of Citizens from South Africa on July 25

The Government of Ghana will begin the final phase of its mass evacuation of citizens from South Africa on July 25, with nearly 900 Ghanaians expected to be repatriated after voluntarily registering to return home. Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, announced that the exercise follows earlier successful repatriation operations launched in response to xenophobic attacks that left many Ghanaian nationals displaced and seeking refuge in churches, hotels and the homes of relatives. Quashie said South African authorities have approved the latest evacuation, which will follow the same procedures used during previous operations to ensure an orderly and safe return of registered citizens.

According to the High Commissioner, only individuals who have completed the registration and screening process will be allowed to board the evacuation flights. The flights are scheduled to operate daily until all registered Ghanaians have been repatriated. He described the operation as the final government-sponsored mass evacuation from South Africa, noting that any future requests for repatriation will be considered individually through Ghana’s consular services rather than through large-scale evacuation exercises. Quashie also advised Ghanaian nationals not to visit the High Commission without prior appointments or official instructions, urging them to follow the established procedures to avoid disruptions and ensure the smooth implementation of the evacuation. The Ghanaian government has repeatedly encouraged its citizens abroad to remain in regular contact with diplomatic missions, particularly during periods of heightened security concerns, to facilitate timely consular assistance when needed.
