Ghana Unveils 24-Hour Economy Plan, With Volta Lake Set for Economic Transformation

President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed the imminent launch of Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Initiative, a nationwide policy aimed at expanding economic output, creating jobs, and fostering inclusive development across all regions. Speaking at a multi-sectoral policy engagement at Jubilee House, Mahama announced that the final draft of the initiative had been reviewed and approved for rollout. He described the plan as a comprehensive, actionable framework designed to unlock Ghana’s full economic potential through round-the-clock productivity.

A central pillar of the initiative is the transformation of the Volta Lake into a strategic transport and economic corridor. This includes enhancing inland water transport, logistics, and port infrastructure, aimed at linking key agricultural and industrial zones to domestic and international markets more efficiently. The 24-hour economy plan also seeks to decentralize implementation, with each region tailoring its operations to local economic strengths, such as agro-processing, manufacturing, tourism, and ICT. Sector-specific night shifts, extended public services, and energy-efficient infrastructure are expected to anchor the policy.

President Mahama emphasized that the program will not only stimulate job creation and reduce urban congestion, but also support regional equity by directing investments toward underdeveloped areas. The initiative is expected to be formally launched in the coming weeks, with pilot projects already under consideration in Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta Regions.
