Senegal and Guinea-Bissau Sign New Cooperation Accords to Boost Regional Ties

Senegal and Guinea-Bissau have deepened their diplomatic and economic ties with the signing of multiple bilateral agreements during a two-day state visit by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to Bissau. President Faye, received with full military honors at the Palácio da República, was awarded Guinea-Bissau’s highest national honor—the Amílcar Cabral Medal—in recognition of his commitment to peace, integration, and regional solidarity.

In a joint press conference with President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, the two leaders reaffirmed their countries’ long-standing cultural and historical bonds and pledged renewed cooperation across key sectors, including healthcare, education, security, transport, trade, cinema, and cultural exchange.

Among the agreements signed were pacts to facilitate cross-border trade and infrastructure development, bolster joint security operations, and enhance youth and educational exchanges. The two sides also pledged closer collaboration on maritime resource management and regional peacebuilding initiatives.

President Faye laid a wreath at the Amura Fortress, honoring Bissau-Guinean independence heroes, and expressed Senegal’s continued commitment to supporting Guinea-Bissau’s stability and development agenda. The visit concluded with a state dinner, marking President Faye’s third official trip to Bissau and signaling a renewed era of Senegal–Guinea-Bissau strategic partnership.
