Kenya’s Alex Matata and Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye claimed the men’s and women’s titles respectively at the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, delivering impressive performances in a highly competitive field.
Matata dominated the men’s race, crossing the finish line in 59 minutes and 20 seconds, narrowly edging out Ethiopia’s Gemechu Dida, who finished second with a time of 59:25. Kenya’s Isaiah Lasoi completed the podium in third place, clocking 59:26. The race saw a close finish at the top, with just six seconds separating the top three runners.
On the women’s side, Ejgayehu Taye, a bronze medalist in the 10,000 meters at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, clinched victory with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 52 seconds. Taye’s victory was hard-earned, as she led a strong contingent of Kenyan runners. Judy Kemboi of Kenya took second place, finishing in 1:06:34, while her compatriot Jesca Chelangat secured third in 1:06:53.
The Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon, known for its fast course and competitive field, saw strong performances across the board, with athletes from both Kenya and Ethiopia continuing to dominate long-distance events. The event has become a key race for athletes aiming to set personal bests and prepare for major international competitions.
