Mali is deepening its academic cooperation with Iran following high-level talks aimed at boosting education, research, and innovation. Mali’s Minister of Higher Education, Bouréma Kansaye, met with officials from Al-Mustapha University, which already operates in Mali, to explore ways the institution can support national priorities in higher education. Discussions focused on expanding training programs, strengthening research capacity, and aligning academic initiatives with Mali’s development goals. The meeting also included expressions of solidarity from Mali over recent losses in Iran’s academic and scientific communities, reflecting broader diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The renewed engagement builds on earlier agreements, including a 2024 plan to establish Iranian-backed institutions in Bamako dedicated to technical training and digital innovation. Existing cooperation frameworks already provide scholarships for Malian students, academic exchange programs, and joint research projects in science and technology. The partnership comes amid Mali’s efforts to modernize its education sector and improve access to skills in key areas such as engineering, digital technology, and applied sciences. For Iran, the collaboration forms part of a wider strategy to expand its educational and cultural influence across Africa. This latest development follows broader diplomatic engagements between the two nations in 2025 and underscores a growing focus on academic mobility, knowledge transfer, and innovation-driven development.
