Morocco has officially become Africa’s top tourist destination, attracting 17.4 million international visitors in 2024, according to a new report by the Ministry of Tourism. This marks a 20% increase from the previous year and a remarkable 33% growth compared to 2019’s pre-pandemic tourism numbers, which stood at 13 million.
The surge in visitors has propelled Morocco past Egypt, the previous leader in African tourism, which recorded 15.7 million tourists in 2024, also a record-breaking year for the country. The significant rise in arrivals reflects Morocco’s growing global appeal and its robust tourism infrastructure.

Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor expressed her excitement over the milestone, stating, “This achievement brings us closer to our goal of ranking among the world’s top 15 tourist destinations.” To reach this goal, Morocco would need to surpass countries like Japan, which welcomed 25 million visitors in 2023.
The increase in tourists has also resulted in a substantial rise in revenue, with Morocco’s tourism earnings reaching $11 billion in 2024, up from $10.5 billion in 2023. While Egypt maintained a lead in revenue with $14.1 billion, Morocco’s growth trajectory indicates a promising future.

Several factors have contributed to this growth. The expansion of Morocco’s air connectivity, with 120 new airline routes, has made it easier for travelers to visit the country. American Airlines’ new direct Newark-to-Marrakech flight is a notable addition. Furthermore, the opening of luxury hotels from global brands such as Four Seasons and Nobu has enhanced the country’s hospitality offerings, attracting high-end tourists.
Looking ahead, Morocco’s tourism industry is poised for further growth. In 2024, the country will host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and in 2030, it will join Spain and Portugal in co-hosting the FIFA World Cup. These global events are expected to significantly boost tourism numbers, with projections indicating that annual arrivals could reach 26 million by the end of the decade.

Morocco’s achievement underscores its rising prominence on the global tourism map, with the country showing no signs of slowing down. With its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and growing infrastructure, Morocco is solidifying its status as a top-tier travel destination.
