The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory urging heightened caution for citizens planning to visit Australia due to a reported increase in harassment and discrimination against foreigners. The advisory, issued on Tuesday by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, highlights concerns over rising antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes targeting foreign nationals in various parts of the country.
The warning comes amid global tensions and ongoing conflicts that have contributed to a surge in hate-related incidents in Australia. The Nigerian government’s statement specifically points to incidents of harassment and discrimination, which have sparked safety concerns for Nigerians in the country. This advisory follows a similar notice issued by the Australian government, which warned its citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to risks associated with terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime. Regions in Nigeria such as Adamawa, Borno, Bayelsa, and Delta were specifically flagged as areas with heightened security risks.

One of the incidents referenced by the Nigerian ministry was the December 2024 episode in Sydney’s Woollahra suburb, where anti-Israel graffiti and the torching of a car prompted public outrage. This incident, along with other reported hate crimes, has raised alarm among the Nigerian government regarding the safety of its citizens abroad.
Despite Australia’s reputation for multiculturalism and tolerance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of Nigerians remaining vigilant and respectful of local customs while traveling. The statement also encouraged travelers to take necessary precautions, stay informed about local conditions, and be aware of potential threats in certain areas.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises Nigerian citizens planning to travel to Australia to consider the prevailing security situation in certain cities. Recent cases of discrimination, harassment, and verbal abuse targeting foreigners, including a disturbing rise in hate crimes, necessitate extra vigilance,” the statement said.
Nigerian nationals who encounter or witness acts of discrimination or hate crimes were encouraged to report such incidents to the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra, where they can receive support and assistance.
As tensions continue to rise globally, both the Nigerian and Australian governments are taking steps to ensure the safety of their citizens, with authorities urging travelers to stay informed and exercise caution while abroad.
