Senegal’s government has issued an urgent advisory to its citizens in light of newly enforced U.S. immigration policies, warning of stricter penalties for violations and urging travelers to ensure full legal compliance. In a statement released Saturday, the Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs (MIAAE) outlined a range of recent U.S. measures aimed at curbing illegal immigration. These include heightened border enforcement, expedited deportations, longer entry bans for individuals with criminal records, and a crackdown on visa overstays.
The U.S. has also rolled out a new voluntary return program using the “CBP One” mobile app. The initiative allows undocumented migrants to return to their countries of origin with logistical support and in some cases financial aid, while minimizing the risk of criminal charges. Senegal’s foreign ministry stressed that while Senegalese citizens are not currently affected by a recent U.S. entry ban applied to 12 other nations following a national security alert in Colorado, travelers must exercise caution. The ministry urged nationals to travel only with valid documents, avoid overstays, and consult official channels for up-to-date immigration guidance.

Senegal’s consulates in the United States are continuing their awareness and outreach campaigns in collaboration with U.S. immigration authorities, aiming to assist Senegalese nationals with legal compliance and avoid complications that could lead to detention or deportation. The advisory comes amid growing U.S. concerns over border security and an increase in asylum claims, with immigration emerging as a top issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Thousands of West Africans, including Senegalese nationals, have attempted irregular entry into the U.S. in recent years, often via Latin America. Senegalese officials reiterated that undocumented migration poses serious legal, humanitarian, and reputational risks—not only for individuals but for diplomatic relations.
