Senegal’s Diomaye Président Coalition Hails Court’s Rejection of Amnesty Law as Win for Democracy

The Diomaye Président coalition, which backed Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s successful 2024 presidential campaign, has welcomed the Senegalese Constitutional Council’s rejection of a controversial interpretative amnesty law that critics said could have shielded political figures from accountability. During a press conference in Dakar, coalition president Aïda Mbodj hailed the Council’s ruling as a “major victory for democracy, justice, and the rule of law.” Mbodj emphasized the importance of judicial independence in Senegal’s evolving political landscape, warning that any attempts to undermine legal institutions would have threatened the country’s fragile democratic gains.

The rejected law, proposed by allies of former President Macky Sall, was widely criticized for potentially granting retroactive immunity for political crimes committed during his administration, particularly in the wake of the deadly protests of 2021 and 2023.

The Diomaye Président coalition also used the occasion to reflect on President Faye’s first year in office, reiterating their full support for his reform agenda aimed at strengthening governance, transparency, and national reconciliation.

President Faye, a former tax inspector and political activist, rose to power on promises to curb corruption, restore public trust, and modernize Senegal’s economy, receiving widespread backing from the youth and civil society groups frustrated by years of political stagnation.
