Sudan has announced its full return to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), ending a two-year suspension triggered by the bloc’s invitation of Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), to peace talks in Uganda. Sudan had suspended membership in January 2024, viewing the invitation as a breach of sovereignty amid its ongoing war with the RSF. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands, displaced 11 million, and split the country, with the RSF controlling large western and southern regions and forming a parallel, unrecognized administration.
Sudan’s foreign ministry cited a January meeting between IGAD’s executive secretary and the Prime Minister as pivotal. A recent IGAD statement condemned RSF violations and reaffirmed Sudan’s unity and sovereignty, paving the way for Khartoum’s return. IGAD welcomed Sudan’s rejoining as a step toward regional solidarity and renewed dialogue, offering hope for peace in a country devastated by civil war.
