Senior RSF Commander Defects to Sudan Army as War Enters Fourth Year

Sudan’s devastating conflict has entered its fourth year with a significant battlefield development, as a senior commander from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has defected to the national army. Major General al-Nour Adam, widely known as “Qubba,” switched allegiance to the Sudanese Armed Forces in one of the highest-profile defections since fighting erupted in April 2023. He was formally received by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in the Northern Province near the Egyptian border.

Footage released by Sudan’s ruling authorities showed Adam arriving with a group of soldiers who also abandoned the RSF, suggesting potential fractures within the paramilitary ranks. Analysts say such defections could weaken command cohesion and signal shifting loyalties within the conflict. Burhan used the occasion to call on other fighters to defect, stating that “doors are open” for those willing to lay down arms and contribute to rebuilding the country.

The war—primarily between the army and the RSF has devastated Sudan, killing tens of thousands and displacing more than 10 million people, according to United Nations estimates. Large parts of the country, including the capital Khartoum and the western Darfur region, have been heavily damaged by urban warfare, airstrikes, and ethnic violence. Humanitarian agencies warn that Sudan is now facing one of the world’s worst crises, with widespread hunger, collapsing healthcare systems, and limited access to aid. Famine conditions have been reported in several communities, while millions remain cut off from basic services. While it remains unclear whether the defection will significantly alter the course of the war, it highlights growing internal pressures within armed groups as the conflict drags on with no clear resolution in sight.
