Twelve Nigerien Soldiers Killed in Tillabéry Ambush Amid Ongoing Anti-Jihadist Operations

Twelve Nigerien soldiers were killed after a terrorist ambush targeted a military patrol in the volatile Tillabéry region, the government announced. The attack, carried out by insurgents hiding among civilian camps, triggered fierce fighting until reinforcements arrived by air and land, forcing the militants to retreat north. Following the assault, Nigerien forces launched a large-scale pursuit operation, deploying significant ground troops and air support to track the attackers. During the sweep, two suspects were captured while attempting to hide on a hilltop and have since been handed over to authorities for further interrogation.

The government expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and praised the courage, professionalism, and patriotism of the armed forces in resisting what it described as a “lawless enemy.”

Tillabéry, located near the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, remains a hotspot for jihadist violence, particularly from groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and Islamic State. The tri-border area has seen repeated attacks targeting both military forces and civilians, contributing to the broader instability that has gripped the Sahel region for nearly a decade. Niger’s military-led government, which seized power in a July 2023 coup, has vowed to intensify counterterrorism efforts, though the security situation remains precarious amid reduced international support following the ousting of the previous civilian administration.
