The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has confirmed the appointment of seasoned Portuguese coach Paulo Jorge Rebelo Duarte as the new manager of the Syli National, following a competitive international recruitment drive launched in June 2025 in partnership with the Ministry of Sports. Duarte, 56, will be officially unveiled at a press conference on August 12, 2025. His arrival comes at a pivotal moment for Guinean football, as the national team gears up for decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Algeria in September.
With more than two decades of coaching experience, Duarte is no stranger to African football. He has led Burkina Faso, Gabon, and Togo in previous spells, guiding Burkina Faso to two Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals. Most recently, he managed Saudi club Al-Kholood during the 2024–2025 season. Hi s appointment was the result of a rigorous selection process that attracted 62 applicants from around the globe. The FGF says Duarte’s proven track record in African competitions, tactical adaptability, and focus on player development made him the standout candidate.
“This is a new chapter for Guinean football,” the federation said in a statement, thanking all candidates who applied and expressing confidence that Duarte can deliver results. The goal, they added, is not only World Cup qualification but also building a sustainable program that can consistently compete at the highest level.
