Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger Deepen Military Alliance with Russia in Landmark Moscow Talks

Defense ministers from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger met in Moscow on August 14 for their first high-level trilateral talks with Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, solidifying a fast-growing security partnership between the Confederation of Sahel States (ESA) and Russia. The meeting comes amid escalating terrorist activity and armed group violence in the Sahel, where the three countries have struggled to contain insecurity after severing military ties with France and other Western partners.

Talks concluded with a joint statement and a memorandum of understanding, pledging expanded defense cooperation, weapons supplies, training, and intelligence sharing. Moscow reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the sovereignty and stability of ESA members, while Sahel leaders vowed to build a “new regional security architecture” free from external political pressure.

The gathering followed earlier contacts in May during the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, but marks the most concrete step yet in deepening Russia–Sahel military relations. Officials say more joint military exercises, equipment deliveries, and strategic planning sessions are already in the works.
