John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, held bilateral talks with Lee Jae-myung, President of South Korea, during an official visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries. The meeting concluded with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focused on maritime security, climate change cooperation and digital technology development, signaling a new phase of collaboration between the two nations. During the talks, Mahama highlighted the longstanding relationship between Ghana and South Korea, noting that both countries share democratic values and a commitment to human rights. He said these shared principles have enabled the two nations to work closely together in international institutions such as the United Nations.
The Ghanaian leader also pointed to growing cooperation in agriculture and agribusiness, particularly through programs supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). These initiatives aim to increase rice production, strengthen agricultural value chains and improve food security in Ghana. Mahama further emphasized opportunities for expanded trade and investment, citing the role of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose secretariat is headquartered in Accra. He said the agreement positions Ghana as a gateway for companies seeking access to Africa’s rapidly growing market. South Korea has been a key development partner for Ghana for decades, providing technical assistance, infrastructure support and training programs across sectors such as technology, education and industrial development. Mahama expressed confidence that combining Ghana’s natural resources and youthful workforce with South Korea’s advanced technology and innovation could create new opportunities for sustainable economic growth and deeper bilateral cooperation.
