Mozambique’s President Chapo Seeks Chinese Investment to Drive Infrastructure and Industrial Growth

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo is looking to deepen economic ties with China as part of efforts to accelerate infrastructure development and industrialization in Mozambique during his first state visit since taking office in 2025. During a tour of industrial hubs in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, Chapo visited factories specializing in power systems, heavy machinery, and agricultural processing. He observed automated production lines, smart energy technologies, and advanced logistics systems, highlighting China’s manufacturing capabilities as a potential model for Mozambique’s development. Mozambique, where nearly two-thirds of the population depends on agriculture, faces ongoing challenges including limited infrastructure, low mechanization, and restricted access to modern technology.

Chapo said adopting Chinese expertise could help modernize farming, improve productivity, and support large-scale infrastructure projects such as roads, ports, and energy networks, key components of the country’s long-term economic strategy. At a bilateral business forum, officials from both countries signed cooperation agreements in sectors including renewable energy, biomedicine, and industrial development. Chapo emphasized the importance of aligning Mozambique’s national development agenda with China’s economic planning framework to maximize investment opportunities.

The visit, hosted by Xi Jinping, reflects growing South-South cooperation between developing nations. China has been a major investor across Africa, financing infrastructure projects through loans, construction partnerships, and technology transfer initiatives. Analysts say Mozambique, a country rich in natural resources such as natural gas and minerals could benefit significantly from increased Chinese investment if projects are managed sustainably and transparently. Chapo’s trip is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and open new pathways for economic cooperation, positioning China as a key partner in Mozambique’s push for modernization and inclusive growth.
