Bobi Wine Rallies Halted Ahead of Uganda’s 2026 Elections

Uganda’s leading opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), says security forces have arrested hundreds of its supporters during campaign events for presidential challenger Bobi Wine in Kampala and Mukono districts where both considered NUP strongholds. Party officials claim the arrests were aimed at disrupting growing momentum for Wine’s second bid against long-time incumbent President Yoweri Museveni. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga accused Wine of organizing an illegal procession and said security officers intervened to “maintain public order.” NUP leaders, however, argue that their rallies complied with electoral guidelines and say the arrests reflect escalating political intimidation ahead of the polls.

Bobi Wine, born Robert Kyagulanyi, is once again challenging Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986. Wine finished second in the 2021 presidential election, alleging widespread irregularities claims the government rejected. Uganda heads to the polls in January, when voters will elect a president and more than 500 members of parliament. Tensions between security forces and the opposition are expected to intensify as the campaign season gains momentum.
