Burkina Faso’s Transitional President, Ibrahim Traoré, has been honored with the prestigious title of ‘Grand Commander of Peace’ (GCOP) at the 14th Pan-African Leaders Symposium and Honours (PALESH) Awards. The event, which is scheduled to take place later this year, is organized by the United Nations Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC), and it recognizes President Traoré’s exceptional leadership, steadfast commitment to nation-building, and transformative governance during his tenure in office.
The award is one of the highest recognitions at the PALESH Awards, which celebrates visionary African leaders whose governance has contributed to sustainable development and peace. The selection process for this honor was overseen by the PALESH steering committee, a distinguished panel of experts and leaders from across Africa. The committee was chaired by the former Vice President of Liberia, H.E. Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor, and the final decision was ratified by UNIPGC Global President, H.E. Amb. Dr. Jonathan Ojadah.
In reaction to the announcement, Dr. Kalkomundo Samuel, Senior Special Assistant to the President of Burkina Faso, expressed the Burkinabe government’s profound appreciation for the honor. He stated that the award reflects President Traoré’s unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and national progress, particularly during the country’s challenging transitional period.
The PALESH Awards have become a respected platform for acknowledging African leadership that drives positive change, innovation, and peacebuilding efforts across the continent. President Traoré’s leadership has been particularly significant as he navigates the complex challenges facing Burkina Faso, including security issues related to extremist groups and internal instability. His government’s focus on peace-building, strengthening national unity, and fostering economic recovery has made a lasting impact in the region.
The PALESH Awards, now in its 14th edition, serve as a recognition of leaders who inspire and implement policies that foster growth and social transformation across Africa. This year’s event will highlight the achievements of African leaders who have championed sustainable governance, regional peace, and progress.
