Burkina Faso Seizes 133 Tons of Drugs in 2024, Prosecutes 522 Individuals

In 2024, Burkina Faso authorities have seized a total of 133 tons of drugs, marking a significant effort in the country’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking. The announcement was made during the 20th ordinary session of the National Committee for the Fight Against Drugs (CNLD) in Ouagadougou, where Inspector General of Police Emmanuel Kaboré, permanent secretary of the CNLD, highlighted the results of coordinated efforts by the country’s defense and security forces. In addition to the drug seizures, 522 individuals were prosecuted for drug-related offenses. As part of a broader prevention strategy, nearly 89,000 people have been reached through nationwide awareness campaigns to combat the growing threat of drug trafficking and abuse.

Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana emphasized the strong link between drug trafficking and terrorism, pointing out that the proceeds from illegal drug sales are often used to fund armed groups. He also announced the introduction of a new national strategy aimed at enhancing coordination and operational effectiveness in tackling the rising complexity of drug-related crimes, which are increasingly tied to transnational criminal networks.

The government has committed to supporting the implementation of the CNLD’s recommendations, which form part of the country’s broader national response to the evolving threat.
