Burkina Faso Thwarts Coup Attempt, Several Military Personnel Arrested

The Burkinabe government announced on Monday that it had successfully thwarted a coup attempt involving both active and former military personnel. The plot, which was uncovered after extensive intelligence gathering, was orchestrated by a network of military collaborators aiming to overthrow the presidency on April 16, 2025. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana revealed in a national television statement that intelligence services had intercepted communications between a soldier and leaders of armed groups, which contained sensitive information about troop positions and planned operations. The main suspect, Lieutenant Abdrahmane Barry, was already under prosecution for desertion and was reportedly central to the conspiracy.

The coup plot was allegedly coordinated with attacks by armed groups, with the intention of overwhelming security forces, spreading false information, and inciting confusion. The plan also sought to pressure fellow soldiers into joining the rebellion. Senior officers, including Captain Jouani Compaoré and Major Constantin Kaboré, were implicated in the plot, though some suspects have reportedly fled to Côte d’Ivoire. Authorities also disclosed that the coup attempt received financial backing to influence members of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), though several members tipped off security services in advance, helping to prevent the plot from succeeding.

Minister Sana further warned that external coordination of the coup plot appears to have originated from Abidjan and urged Burkinabe citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help safeguard national security.
