Ethiopian Airlines Orders 10 Boeing Freighters in Major Cargo Expansion

Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement to acquire 10 Boeing freighter aircraft as Africa’s largest airline expands its cargo operations and international network. The deal, announced on September 30, includes eight next-generation Boeing 777-8 Freighters and two current-generation 777 Freighters. The aircraft have a combined catalogue value of about $5 billion, although the actual purchase price was not disclosed. The airline also has an option to acquire eight additional freighters. The order makes Ethiopian Airlines the first African carrier to purchase Boeing’s 777-8 Freighter. The new aircraft can carry up to 118 tones of cargo and are designed to provide greater range and efficiency for long-haul freight operations.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates 12 Boeing 777 freighters, two Boeing 767 freighters and four Boeing 737-800 converted freighters. Its cargo network serves more than 70 markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Chief Executive Mesfin Tasew said the investment would strengthen the airline’s cargo capacity and support the expansion of its global network, while reinforcing Ethiopia’s role as a major air-cargo gateway between Africa and international markets. The purchase is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ wider fleet expansion. In 2026, the carrier also confirmed additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner orders as it continues to expand its passenger and cargo operations.
