Fire Engulfs Major Sudanese Oil Refinery Amid Escalating Conflict

A major oil refinery, located approximately 71 kilometers north of Khartoum, Sudan, has been destroyed in a devastating fire. The incident has sparked a tense blame game between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), each accusing the other of being responsible for the attack.

The Sudanese army claims the RSF deliberately set the refinery ablaze in a “desperate attempt” to cripple the country’s oil infrastructure, after failing to gain control of the resources. The army argues that this act is part of a broader strategy by the RSF to destabilize Sudan’s economy and weaken the state.

In contrast, the RSF accuses the army of conducting an airstrike on the refinery, reportedly using barrel bombs early in the morning. According to RSF spokespeople, this attack is just another example of the “war crimes” they claim the army has been committing throughout the ongoing conflict.

Witnesses who were in the area reported seeing thick, black smoke rising from the refinery, which is one of Sudan’s largest and a key player in the country’s energy supply. The destruction of the refinery is expected to have significant implications for Sudan’s energy sector, which has already been severely impacted by the war between the army and RSF forces.
