Ghana to Launch Biometric e-Passports with Enhanced Security and Faster Services

The Government of Ghana will officially launch chip-embedded biometric passports on Monday, April 28, 2025, marking a major leap in passport security and service modernization. Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the initiative as part of a broader effort to digitize public services, combat passport fraud, and eliminate unauthorized middlemen in the application process.

The new e-passports will contain encrypted microchips that store biometric data, such as facial and fingerprint identifiers, significantly boosting protection against identity theft, forgery, and illegal duplication. In addition to the biometric upgrade, the Ministry is introducing sweeping reforms to the passport issuance process:

  • 24-hour express service for urgent applications,
  • Nationwide courier delivery of passports,
  • Real-time e-tracking of application status, and
  • A 30% reduction in application fees.

Minister Ablakwa described the changes as a “citizen-centered transformation” aimed at efficiency, transparency, and equal access, positioning Ghana as a regional leader in secure travel documentation.

“These upgrades are not just technological. They represent our commitment to serving Ghanaians better, faster, and more fairly,” he stated. The initiative aligns with global standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and enhances Ghana’s readiness for cross-border digital verification systems, easing travel for citizens worldwide.
