At Least 12 Dead After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Eastern Libya

Emergency teams are recovering bodies after a migrant boat capsized off Libya’s eastern coast near Derna, between the towns of Al-Tamimi and Umm Al-Razm, highlighting once again the deadly risks of the Central Mediterranean migration route. Saleh Jumaa Al-Mahjoub of the Libyan Red Crescent said 12 bodies have been retrieved so far from the Qasr Al-Akhyar and Ghanima coastal areas. Search and rescue operations remain under way as authorities attempt to determine how many migrants were on board when the vessel sank. Libya remains a major departure point for migrants and asylum seekers from sub-Saharan Africa and other regions seeking to reach Europe. Many attempt the perilous sea crossing toward Italy or Greece in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats operated by smuggling networks.

The Central Mediterranean corridor is widely regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes. According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 2,100 migrants died or went missing in the Mediterranean last year alone. Aid groups caution that the real number may be higher, as many shipwrecks are never documented. Eastern Libya has experienced repeated maritime tragedies in recent years, with limited search and rescue capacity and ongoing political instability compounding the risks faced by migrants. As recovery efforts continue, humanitarian organizations are again urging stronger international cooperation to prevent further loss of life along the route.
