Libyan Naval Force Rescues 35 Migrants Near Tunisian Border

Libya’s Zuwara Naval Operations Force announced Thursday that it had rescued 35 migrants in a mission near the Tunisian border earlier this week, underscoring the growing dangers faced by those attempting to cross the Mediterranean. The operation took place Tuesday off the coast of Zuwara, a western Libyan town controlled by the Tripoli-based government. Footage released by the naval unit showed migrants being pulled from boats before receiving emergency medical care on land. Authorities confirmed the survivors included five women and a child. Libya remains one of the main departure points for migrants and refugees fleeing conflict, poverty, and instability in Africa and the Middle East. Thousands attempt the perilous journey each year, often aboard overcrowded or unseaworthy boats.

The rescue comes just days after tragedy struck off Libya’s coast. On Sunday, a vessel carrying Sudanese refugees caught fire and capsized, killing at least 50 people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The scale of the crisis remains alarming. Data from IOM’s Missing Migrants Project shows that at least 434 migrants have died and another 611 have gone missing off the Libyan coast in the past eight months alone. Human rights groups have repeatedly called for stronger international coordination to protect migrants making the dangerous crossing, while pressing Libya and European nations to address the root causes driving mass migration across the region.
