Ghana Government Launches Affordable Housing Scheme for Ghanaian Teachers

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a new affordable housing initiative in collaboration with the Teachers’ Fund to support Ghanaian educators. The program, unveiled during a policy forum in Accra, will enable teachers to purchase two-bedroom homes through flexible salary deductions.

The homes will be priced in Ghanaian cedis to shield buyers from exchange rate fluctuations and ensure long-term affordability. Mahama emphasized that the scheme is designed to address the acute housing challenges faced by many teachers, especially those posted to rural areas. The initiative is part of Mahama’s broader education and social protection strategy, which includes plans to modernize school infrastructure, enhance teacher training, and provide better living conditions for educators.

“This is not just a housing policy—it’s an investment in our teachers’ dignity and the future of education in Ghana,” Mahama said, highlighting the pivotal role educators play in national development.

The Teachers’ Fund, a statutory retirement and welfare scheme managed by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), will oversee the financial structuring of the program, ensuring transparency and sustainability.
