Mahama Urges Bawku Residents to Embrace Peace During Ramadan

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the people of Bawku in Ghana’s Upper East Region to embrace peace as they observe Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of unity and reconciliation during this sacred period.

Speaking at the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration held at Accra’s Black Star Square on Monday, 31st March 2025, President Mahama acknowledged the persistent tensions in Bawku and urged all factions to set aside their differences for the sake of development and social harmony.

The long-standing conflict in Bawku, primarily fueled by ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, has led to periodic violence, loss of lives, and displacement of residents. Mahama stressed that without peace, progress in the region would remain stunted, affecting education, business, and livelihoods.

He called on religious and traditional leaders to play an active role in fostering dialogue, urging them to serve as mediators in resolving conflicts. “The holy month of Ramadan is a time of reflection, forgiveness, and unity. Let us use this period to heal wounds, build bridges, and move forward together,” he stated. President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting peace initiatives in Bawku, pledging government resources to help restore stability in the region.

The call for peace comes amid heightened security concerns in Bawku, with occasional clashes reported despite interventions by security agencies. The President concluded his address by encouraging residents to uphold the values of love, tolerance, and coexistence, emphasizing that sustainable development can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
