Sudanese Celebrate Eid al-Fitr Amid War as Army Gains Ground in Khartoum

Despite the ongoing war and displacement crisis, Sudanese citizens gathered in Omdurman on Sunday to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, embracing a sense of resilience and hope as the army made further advances against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum State.

Amid the bullet-scarred surroundings of their city, worshippers filled mosques, chanting “God is the greatest” as they marked the end of Ramadan. Many saw this year’s Eid as particularly significant, given the hardships of the past two years.

“I feel happy because, with God’s grace, the Sudanese military is achieving victory after victory,” said Emad El-Deen Hassan after attending Eid prayers. “The best part is that people will begin to return to their homes, cities, and villages.”

Salah Mokhtar, who had been displaced from Khartoum to Omdurman, shared similar sentiments. “This year’s Eid feels particularly special—especially after two years of conflict and the liberation of Khartoum.”

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s military and the RSF, has claimed over 28,000 lives and forced millions to flee. However, the army’s recent recapture of key government buildings, including the Republican Palace, has renewed optimism among some residents.

As Sudanese celebrate Eid amid war, the hope for a return to peace and stability remains at the forefront of their prayers.
