Suspected Jihadists Attack Mali’s Morila Gold Mine, Employees Taken Hostage

Suspected jihadists attacked Mali’s Morila gold mine over the weekend, destroying equipment and briefly taking seven employees hostage, according to eyewitnesses. All hostages were later released unharmed. The incident occurred on Saturday. A spokesperson for Mali’s Ministry of Mines confirmed the attack, stating that no employees were killed and that the army has regained control of the site and is conducting security sweeps.

US-based Flagship Gold, which signed an investment agreement with Mali’s state-owned mining company in October 2025 to restart operations at Morila, also confirmed the incident through a ministry spokesperson. The company, incorporated in June 2024 in New York, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Morila mine is estimated to hold 2.5 million ounces of gold, making it a key site for Mali’s gold production.
