Chebbak’s Hat-Trick Powers Morocco Past DR Congo at 2024 WAFCON

Morocco’s women’s national team delivered a commanding 4–2 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their second Group A match at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, July 9. Captain Ghizlane Chebbak led from the front with a sensational hat-trick, scoring in the 25th, 43rd, and 76th minutes. Her performance not only energized the home crowd but also showcased Morocco’s growing dominance in women’s football. Midfielder Yasmin Mrabet added a fourth from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute, confirming the Atlas Lionesses’ second consecutive strong outing.

Although DR Congo managed to score twice through Naomie Kabakaba and Charlène Mukeba, their defensive frailties were exposed throughout the game. Morocco outclassed them in both possession and finishing, continuing the momentum from their opening 1–1 draw against Zambia. With the win, Morocco tops Group A with four points, edging Zambia on goal difference. Senegal sits in third with three points after a narrow win over DR Congo in their opener, while Congo remains without a point and faces early elimination.

The Atlas Lionesses now face a crucial group-stage finale against Senegal on Saturday, July 12, in what could be a decider for a spot in the quarter-finals. Morocco is aiming to improve on their historic 2022 performance, when they reached the WAFCON final and qualified for their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup.
