Niger’s Leader Visits Algeria as Both Sides Move to Reset Diplomatic Ties

Niger’s head of state, Abdourahamane Tiani, arrived in Algiers on Sunday for a working visit aimed at reviving strained relations between Niger and Algeria. Tiani is accompanied by a senior delegation including ministers in charge of defense, foreign affairs, energy, petroleum and infrastructure, signaling talks focused on security cooperation, economic ties and cross-border development. The visit follows recent diplomatic gestures seen as steps toward normalization. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the return of Algeria’s ambassador to Niamey, shortly after Niger’s envoy resumed duties in Algiers, ending months of diplomatic cooling after political upheaval in the Sahel.

The trip takes place amid shifting regional dynamics. Algeria has increased cooperation with countries such as Burkina Faso in sectors including mining and hydrocarbons, while relations with Mali remain tense over a dispute involving the downing of a Malian drone and related proceedings at the International Court of Justice. Niger and Burkina Faso—both members of the Alliance of Sahel States—had previously aligned with Mali in that dispute. Analysts say Tiani’s visit reflects a calculated effort to reinforce dialogue with Algeria and recalibrate Niger’s regional partnerships as alliances in the Sahel continue to evolve.
