Nigeria Evacuates Ebola Patient to Switzerland as Contact Tracing Expands

Nigeria has evacuated its only confirmed Ebola patient to Switzerland for continued medical care as authorities intensify contact tracing and screening measures to limit the risk of further infections. The 42-year-old woman, who holds Swiss citizenship and is married to a Swiss embassy staff member based in Abuja, had travelled to Uganda with her husband before returning to Nigeria. Her evacuation comes amid concern over the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has affected parts of Central and East Africa. Nigeria’s Health Minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, said the patient’s condition had improved and she was stable, conscious and able to communicate. However, he cautioned that her improved condition did not necessarily mean she was no longer infectious.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said 53 primary contacts had been identified, including healthcare workers, family members and household staff. Authorities are monitoring those who may have been exposed to the virus. A suspected case reported in Rivers State tested negative, according to NCDC Director-General Jide Idris. The patient reportedly arrived in Nigeria on October 3, but her diagnosis was announced on October 20. The interval has raised concerns about possible exposure before the infection was confirmed. Authorities have strengthened screening at international airports and expanded surveillance, although reports indicate that screening measures vary across some land borders and domestic travel routes.

The Bundibugyo strain is a rare form of Ebola for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment is currently available. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials. The World Health Organization has warned that the outbreak presents a complex regional challenge, with cases reported across parts of Africa. Nigeria previously contained an Ebola outbreak in 2014 through contact tracing, isolation and public health measures. Health authorities continue to urge vigilance as they work to identify potential exposures and prevent further transmission.
