Outrage in Kinshasa as M23 Rebels Capture Goma; Protests Erupt Against Foreign Governments

Hundreds of young men in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), took to the streets on Monday to express their outrage over the entry of M23 rebels into the eastern city of Goma. The protests quickly escalated as demonstrators barricaded roads and attacked the embassies of Rwanda, Uganda, France, and the United States.

The French embassy was set on fire and vandalized, reflecting the intense anger among locals who accuse these foreign governments of supporting Rwanda, which UN experts have previously stated was backing the M23 rebel group. Rwanda has strongly denied these allegations and instead blamed the DRC for allegedly supporting a Hutu militia that aims to overthrow its government.

The M23 rebels made a dramatic entrance into Goma, claiming to have captured the city from government forces, although fighting has continued over control of the strategic city, which lies in the mineral-rich province of North Kivu. The ongoing conflict has raised fears of further escalation.

In response to the growing tensions, the African Union and the United Nations Security Council have called for emergency meetings to discuss measures to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, hoping to avoid more violence in an already volatile region.
