Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko concluded a two-day official visit to Conakry on Monday aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Senegal and Guinea. The trip marks Sonko’s first visit to Guinea since assuming office in April 2024, signaling a renewed focus on regional diplomacy.
During his visit, Sonko held closed-door discussions with Guinean Prime Minister Bah Oury, covering key areas such as economic integration, cross-border security, infrastructure development, and cultural collaboration. The two leaders agreed to establish joint technical committees tasked with formulating actionable frameworks for cooperation. In a joint statement, both governments emphasized their shared commitment to regional stability and development, and pledged to hold regular consultations to address transnational challenges such as trade facilitation, border management, and youth employment.
Sonko also paid tribute at the Monument of National Heroes in Conakry, underscoring the historical and political ties between the two countries. Observers noted the visit as a symbolic gesture toward mending fractured regional relationships and reinforcing West African solidarity amid broader geopolitical shifts in the Sahel. The visit follows recent diplomatic engagements by Senegal’s new administration under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, aimed at repositioning the country as a leader in African regional integration.
