Tanzanian police have arrested three park rangers after a 25-year-old man died and another was seriously injured following their detention inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, authorities said. The men Sefu Musa, Salimu Haji and Abdallah Nuru, were reportedly travelling by motorcycle from Arusha to Babati for a funeral when they lost their way and entered the protected area without following the required procedures. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Musa’s death. Haji remains in hospital, while Nuru returned to Arusha and later spoke to local media about the incident. Nuru alleged that the three were assaulted by rangers after being stopped at a park gate. He said they explained that they had taken the wrong route and were not poachers, but were nevertheless detained. His allegations have not been independently verified, and authorities have not publicly confirmed how Musa died.
The arrests of the three rangers come as Tanzania faces longstanding scrutiny over enforcement practices in the Ngorongoro area. The 8,100-square-kilometre conservation area was established in 1959 as a multiple-use landscape intended to balance wildlife conservation, tourism and Maasai pastoralism. Human rights groups and UN experts have previously raised concerns about alleged excessive force, harassment, arrests and restrictions affecting Maasai communities in Ngorongoro. Tanzania has rejected allegations of forced evictions and says conservation measures are necessary to protect the area’s environment and wildlife. The latest case is likely to renew scrutiny of how conservation rules are enforced and how alleged abuses by security personnel are investigated. Police say the three rangers were arrested as investigations continue into the incident. Authorities are expected to establish the cause of Musa’s death and determine whether any criminal or disciplinary offences were committed.
