Trump to Host Five African Leaders in July to Deepen Trade Ties Amid Shift in U.S. Africa Policy

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host the leaders of Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal from July 9 to 11, as part of a renewed push to strengthen America’s economic ties with Africa. The unexpected mini-summit will take place in Washington, with officials indicating that trade, investment, and regional stability will top the agenda. The visit marks Trump’s most significant multilateral engagement with African leaders since his return to frontline politics and is seen as part of a broader strategy to recalibrate U.S.-Africa relations.

Trump’s administration has prioritized commercial partnerships over traditional aid, with plans to expand private-sector-led development and scale back humanitarian programs. According to U.S. diplomatic sources, the July meetings will explore opportunities in energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and mining, sectors where American companies have shown growing interest. The summit follows last month’s successful U.S.-brokered peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which temporarily halted hostilities and rebel activity in eastern Congo. Trump hailed the accord as a “great day for Africa,” reinforcing his administration’s pivot toward conflict mediation and trade-led diplomacy.

Though bilateral talks with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in May were reportedly tense—some observers described Trump’s approach as “confrontational”—the upcoming engagements are expected to be more collaborative. Plans are also underway for a full-scale U.S.-Africa Summit in September, though official confirmations from African governments are still pending. If held, it would represent the first such forum since 2022 and signal the U.S.’s intent to compete with growing Chinese and Russian influence across the continent.
