Ghana Rejects Claims of 25% Fee Increase at University of Ghana

Ghana’s Ministry of Education has denied reports that academic fees at the University of Ghana have been increased by 25 percent, saying no such adjustment has been approved by the government. Deputy Minister of Education Dr Clement Apaak said the ministry does not support any rise in academic fees, whether proposed by university authorities or student representative bodies. He stressed that all changes to fees must follow established consultation processes and comply with guidelines set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

Dr Apaak said particular care must be taken to protect students, especially those newly admitted and still adjusting to university life, from unexpected financial pressure. He emphasized that the ministry has not authorised any upward review of fees and directed that all existing charges remain in force. The deputy minister also ordered that any payments already made under the reported revised fee structure be refunded until proper approval is granted and regulatory requirements are met. He further requested that the University of Ghana submit documentation proving full compliance with GTEC’s fee-setting regulations. In response, the University of Ghana’s management said the figures circulating for the 2025/2026 academic year largely reflect charges introduced by student leadership groups rather than fee increases formally approved by the university or the ministry.
