Military cooperation between the United States and Nigeria has intensified following coordinated operations targeting fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in northeastern Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad Basin. According to United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), fresh joint airstrikes were carried out near Metele in Borno State just days after the reported killing of senior ISWAP commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, also known as Abubakar Mainok. The operation reportedly killed several of the militant leader’s close associates and targeted strategic ISIS-linked positions in the region.

Al-Minuki, a native of Borno State, was regarded as one of ISWAP’s most influential commanders before reportedly rising to a broader operational role within the global Islamic State network. The latest offensive signals deepening security collaboration between Washington and Abuja as both countries seek to contain insurgency and cross-border extremist activities in the Lake Chad region. Reports indicate that nearly 200 US military personnel, along with General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drones, have been deployed since early 2026 to support Nigerian counterterrorism operations. The deployment followed earlier joint strikes launched in late 2025.

AFRICOM said assessments are still ongoing to determine the full impact of the latest military operations. Security analysts, however, warn that while the elimination of senior commanders may disrupt militant operations temporarily, extremist groups such as ISWAP often replace leadership quickly, limiting the long-term strategic impact of such strikes. Despite these concerns, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to supporting African partners in combating terrorism, improving regional stability and strengthening security cooperation across the Lake Chad Basin. The insurgency in northeastern Nigeria has persisted for more than a decade, displacing millions of people and causing widespread humanitarian and security challenges across Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
