Fear has gripped Wedela, a township on Johannesburg’s West Rand, after a mass shooting at a tavern left 17 people dead and 15 others injured on Saturday night. Police said eight unidentified men entered the tavern in Extension 3 at about 9:30 p.m. and opened fire on people outside before continuing the attack inside. The suspects allegedly took mobile phones from some patrons before fleeing in two vehicles, two of which were later set alight. The victims included 13 men and four women. Police have opened 17 murder cases, 15 attempted-murder cases and two cases of malicious damage to property. The motive remains under investigation.
Residents say the shooting has intensified fears in a community that has previously experienced violence associated with illegal mining gangs, commonly known as zama zamas. Gauteng police are also investigating whether the latest attack could be connected to an earlier shooting at the same tavern. Residents described the incident as deeply traumatic, particularly for families who were nearby when the gunfire erupted. Some are calling for a stronger security presence, including the deployment of soldiers. Police have mobilized detectives and specialized units and launched a manhunt for the suspects. A police investigation is examining several possible motives, including whether the attack may have been retaliation connected to earlier violence.
