Ghana Extends Curfew in Bawku Municipality Amid Ongoing Security Concerns

The Ghanaian government has announced the extension of the curfew imposed on Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, as tensions continue to rise in the area.

In a statement issued by the Ministry for the Interior, it was confirmed that the revised curfew hours will now run from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, beginning Monday, February 24, 2025. The move comes in response to escalating security concerns, with authorities working to curb the violence that has plagued the area in recent months.

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, called on local leaders, including chiefs, elders, and youth, to act with restraint and to prioritize peaceful dialogue and conflict resolution in their communities. “We urge all residents to cooperate with security forces and avoid actions that could escalate tensions further,” the Minister stated.

The government has also reiterated a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons in the affected areas. Authorities have made it clear that violators will face serious legal consequences, including arrest and prosecution.

Bawku has faced intermittent conflicts linked to ethnic and chieftaincy disputes, with both the local population and security forces struggling to restore order. The curfew extension is part of the government’s broader strategy to maintain peace and stability in the region, as well as to ensure the safety of civilians amid ongoing challenges.

In addition to the curfew, security operations will continue in the region, with law enforcement agencies working alongside local leadership to mediate conflicts and prevent further violence.
