Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized his vision for the Global South on Wednesday during a two-day state visit to Mauritius, following discussions with his Mauritian counterpart, Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
Speaking to journalists in Port Louis, Modi presented a vision for the Global South centered on “looking beyond the sea, looking towards the ocean,” emphasizing mutual advancement for security, growth, and sustainable development across regions. “This vision includes trade, capacity building for sustainable growth, and a collective sense of security, with a shared future in mind,” Modi explained.
During the visit, several key agreements were signed, covering areas such as maritime security, trade in national currencies, and capacity building to support the sustainable growth of both nations. The agreements aimed to strengthen India-Mauritius cooperation in sectors ranging from crime investigations and maritime traffic monitoring to infrastructure, diplomacy, commerce, finance, and the ocean economy.
“We are enhancing our already excellent bilateral relations with these wide-ranging agreements,” said Mauritius Prime Minister Ramgoolam, adding that the cooperation in sectors like maritime security, finance, and commerce would bring tangible benefits to both countries.
One of the notable highlights of the signing ceremony included the handing over of maritime navigation charts to Mauritius, a move aimed at improving safety and coordination in the Indian Ocean.
Prime Minister Modi also announced that the relationship between India and Mauritius would be elevated to the status of an “enhanced strategic partnership,” which is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties in multiple sectors.
Modi’s visit coincided with the National Day celebrations of Mauritius, where he was the chief guest. During his participation, he underscored India’s commitment to deepening its ties with Mauritius and contributing to the broader goals of the Global South.
The strengthened India-Mauritius relationship aligns with Modi’s broader foreign policy initiatives, aimed at fostering cooperation among developing nations and enhancing India’s role in global geopolitics.
