Soulful performances, rich African rhythms, and global musical influences took center stage at the second edition of Jazz Across Continents, as musicians and jazz enthusiasts gathered at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja to celebrate the enduring power of jazz as a universal language. The concert showcased an eclectic mix of classic jazz standards and contemporary African-inspired compositions, highlighting the genre’s ability to bridge cultures, inspire creativity, and connect people beyond borders. Speaking at the event, host and pianist Warmate De Jazz Pianist described jazz as a unique form of artistic expression that allows individuals to communicate emotions without barriers.
“Jazz is an expression of individual uniqueness. It allows people to express their feelings through sound and music, and it transcends regions, tribes, and race,” he said. Singer Ene also emphasized music’s ability to unite diverse audiences, noting that its emotional impact extends beyond language. “Music is a universal language. Even when people don’t understand the lyrics, they can still connect with the emotions and the message,” she said. The event also celebrated jazz’s deep African heritage. While the genre evolved in the United States in the early 20th century, historians widely recognize that its foundations lie in African musical traditions, rhythms, and spiritual expressions carried to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade.
Since the 1960s, African musicians have continued to redefine jazz by blending traditional instruments, indigenous melodies, and local rhythms with modern improvisation, creating distinctive styles that reflect the continent’s rich cultural diversity. Organizers said Jazz Across Continents is designed to preserve jazz’s historical legacy while promoting collaboration among artists from different backgrounds. They added that the festival serves as a platform for cultural exchange, artistic innovation, and the continued growth of African jazz on the global stage.
