Maghreb International Film Festival Opens in Oujda with Spotlight on Cultural Dialogue

The 14th edition of the Maghreb International Film Festival opened on Monday night at the Mohammed VI Theater in Oujda, Morocco, under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI. This year’s theme, “From Cinema Screens, Bridges Are Built and Stories Are Told,” highlights the festival’s mission of using cinema to foster dialogue and creative exchange between the Maghreb and the wider world.

The week-long program, running until October 4, features film screenings, forums, and training workshops alongside tributes to leading figures in North African cinema. Among those honored is veteran Moroccan actor Rabie Kati, recognized for his decades-long contribution to the country’s film industry.

Actor and festival advocate Rachid El Ouali said the event aims not only to showcase films but also to create learning opportunities. “It’s about giving audiences access to cinematic works they might never otherwise see, and building spaces where creators and participants can exchange ideas,” he explained. Since its launch, the Oujda festival has become a fixture of Morocco’s cultural calendar, offering a platform for regional filmmakers while promoting Oujda as a hub for artistic dialogue.
