Mo Salah’s Ballon d’Or Dreams Linked to Liverpool’s Silverware Hopes, Says Coach

Mohamed Salah is enjoying a record-breaking season with Liverpool, currently leading the Premier League’s scoring chart with 25 goals and 16 assists. The Egyptian forward’s exceptional form has led to discussions about his potential to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or later this year, but his chances could depend heavily on how much silverware Liverpool secures.

Liverpool coach Arne Slot weighed in on Salah’s bid for the Ballon d’Or, emphasizing that while Salah’s individual performances are impressive, his chances of winning the coveted award will be closely tied to Liverpool’s success in the remainder of the season.

“It’s a good thing that Mo is in the discussion for the Ballon d’Or, because if he does well, it means we are doing well. However, to stay in that discussion, he needs to maintain the same level of performance that he has displayed consistently for the past seven or eight months,” Slot said.

Slot also pointed out that in general, players who win the Ballon d’Or typically bring home major trophies with their clubs, making silverware a crucial factor in Salah’s pursuit of the award.

“It’s a great challenge that lies ahead, not only for him but also for us as a team,” he added. “Winning something is important, and that’s what we are all striving for.”

The 31-year-old forward, who has been with Liverpool since 2017, has enjoyed several outstanding seasons at the club. Slot expressed hope that Salah will continue to deliver for Liverpool in the long term, although he added a key caveat: Salah must extend his contract beyond the current season.

“Salah has been phenomenal, but to ensure his future with the club, he needs to extend his contract,” said Slot. “We hope that he will stay with us for many more years.”

As of now, Salah has yet to agree on a contract extension, and his future at Liverpool remains uncertain. However, his contributions have been crucial in helping Liverpool build an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League over second-place Arsenal, with the team aiming to secure their 20th league title.

If Salah does go on to win the Ballon d’Or, he would be the first African player to do so since George Weah in 1995. This adds further weight to the importance of Salah’s performance, both for his individual achievements and for the club’s title aspirations this season.
