Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio on Tuesday welcomed Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to Freetown for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two West African nations. The visit marks Prime Minister Sonko’s first official trip to Sierra Leone since assuming office in April 2024 under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration. His arrival was greeted with full state honors at Lungi International Airport before proceeding to bilateral meetings at State House in Freetown.
Discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, education, agriculture, and regional security. Both sides agreed to explore joint initiatives on youth employment, digital transformation, and infrastructure development.

The visit comes amid growing momentum for stronger ECOWAS solidarity, with both Sierra Leone and Senegal reaffirming their commitment to regional integration and democratic governance.
Prime Minister Sonko’s delegation includes senior Senegalese officials and business leaders, signaling a renewed push for private sector engagement and investment between the two countries. The two governments are expected to sign several memoranda of understanding before the end of the visit, which concludes on Wednesday.
